A picture shared by Miss Iraq Sarah Idan has caused quite a controversy in her home country. The beauty queen had clicked a photo with Miss Israel Adar Gandelsman at the Miss Universe competition last month. But little did she know that her snap will create a situation where her family would have to go into hiding because of death threats.
As soon as Sarah posted her picture with Adar on Instagram, some people in Iraq began issuing threats against the beauty queen and her family, a move arising out of the tensions between Jews and Arabs.
"People threatened (Sarah) and her family that she would withdraw her title [Miss Iraq] if she did not go home to take the pictures for her to kill," said Israeli TV station Adar.
Sarah also confirmed the story through tweets: "I am not the first or last person to be persecuted for a problem of personal liberty - millions of Iraqi women live in fear. #freeiraqiwomen."
She also defended the photo and said that it was only a way of spreading the message of peace.
“I want to stress that the purpose of the picture was only to express hope and desire for peace between the two countries,” she wrote on Instagram.
